In the Philippines, we spend New Year's Eve stuffing our faces with bread and hot chocolate and Edam cheese balls and ham (to which I, the vegetarian, shamefully gave in) and lighting firecrackers so much so that hospital emergency rooms are always filled with people with blown-up body parts every January 1st.
