After trying them out on the cheap, courtesy of H&M, I've realized how well velvet slippers fit into my life, and now I want more of them. They are worldly, classy, and delighfully eccentric, and the fact they they're slip-ons allows you to look put-together without going through the cumbersome process of tying up lace-ups or buckling up boots. Stubbs and Wootton, quality velvet-slipper-makers since 1993, are old-school, WASPy, and not exactly fashion-y, but theirs are the cleverest velvet slippers I have seen in a long time.
