SCOTIABANK CONTACT PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL: TWO AND A QUARTER
Mood [Exhausted]
Currently Playing [None]
Lomography Gallery Store Toronto is pleased to present Two and a Quarter this May, as part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. This group exhibition was organized in response to a current trend in snapshot photography, which finds many producing ‘square images,’ as opposed to the standard and familiar rectangle image. This square aesthetic, something seemingly of the past, infuses each photo with a sense of nostalgia, making us think that our images ‘look better’ or are more unique and authentic.

This nostalgic trend to “shoot square” was inspired by the plastic point-and-shoot cameras of our past, such as the classic Diana, and is shot with film for which two and a quarter is the aspect ratio of the exposure area. Using these guiding principles, the artists in this exhibit, exploring the theme of “nostalgia as trend and inspiration,” and created their own unique and imaginative images with the Lomography Diana F+ camera. The original Diana, first born in the 1960’s and then reborn again in 2007 by Lomography, is a plastic, simple medium format camera that has inspired a global community of fans through its original charms and nostalgic qualities. It is these qualities that are intrinsically associated with analogue photography—aged, exposure flaws, soft focus, and light leaks. This group exhibition highlights the creativity possible within the square image and to embrace the nostalgic quality of analogue processes that continue to resonate in the modern world.
