take another little piece of my heart, now baby
Just a few weeks ago, we talked about all of the recent film projects centered around the 60s and 70s (you remember: Jimi, The Rolling Stones, CBGB, and my fingers are still crossed for Marianne Faithfull). Well it seems that the film industry’s renewed interest in the culture of this era has inspired producers to attempt that often-tried, but usually ill-fated Janis Joplin biopic. Several actresses have been attached to this project over the years, most notable being Renée Zellweger, singer Pink, Amy Adams and Zooey Deschanel (who was quoted when her project was scrapped last year as saying, "I've been working on her scratchy voice with a vocal coach for three years and now we've found out it just isn't going to happen. That's a lot of time to spend prepping for a movie").Nina Arianda, who won a Tony Award for her performance in Venus in Fur (and won my heart in Midnight in Paris as Michael Sheen’s wife Carol who couldn’t pronounce ‘Sorbonne’), will play the legendary singer in the simply titled Joplin. The film, to be directed by Sean Durkin (who did Martha Marcy May Marlene) is already estimated at over $20 million. This is in part due to the fact that they have been granted rights to twenty-one of the singer’s best-known songs from her catalogue. Production will begin at the start of 2013. What do you think of the casting? Obviously Nina has talent out the wazoo, but can you see her crooning “Me and Bobby McGee” onscreen? As a personal fan of Joplin and of biopics in general, I’m excited to see how this will turn out.
